Some of the situations that can lead to anxiety & stress in kids are;

    • Change, e.g., new home, school, stepfamilies, parents separating
    • Loss of a loved one such as a family member, pet, etc.
    • Not enough creative play at home
    • Exposure to family violence
    • Parental challenges including mental health

Chill Skills for kid’s classes involve a range of fun activities to help kids learn how to relax, explore their imagination and learn valuable life skills.

What we do in a session

  • Gentle movement
  • Show the kids how to imagine their worries away
  • Listen to relaxing stories
  • Various styles of mindfulness & meditation to suit different age groups of children
  • Therapeutic creative activities to help with self-expression
  • Talk about how worry can store in the body, and how to use Chill Skills to release it
  • Learn about acknowledging and interpreting emotions 
  • Using journals the children learn about creating positive self-talk

Above all the classes are fun and enjoyable.

Coping skills for life

By attending the classes and doing the activities the children learn how to create a “chill out” routine that works for them.

They learn skills that can carry them through life’s ups and downs. Learning to relax is a skill that is learnt, takes time and most importantly is an ongoing practise that is an essential part of maintaining our wellbeing.

For children, Chill Skills for Kids is engaging and a gentle, fun way to learn how to;

  • Find different ways to be calm & relaxed
  • Create positive self-talk
  • Create confidence
  • Build self-esteem
  • Create self-awareness
  • Acknowledge feelings in the body and learn ways to release them
  • Express themselves through creative activities

Program Structure

Chill Skills for Kids is a 6 week program for a small group of children led by a Chill Skills for Kids trained facilitator.

Classes are age specific to ensure your child gets the most out of each class.

  • There are two age groups; 5-7 and 8-12 years
  • Numbers are limited to 6 to 8 children per class
  • Sessions usually run for 1 hour
  • Classes are generally, run to coincide with school terms
  • Kids can make positive change after attending for one term, many kids come back and do Chill Skills for at least two terms, with some continuing for over a year. Often because they enjoy it and make friends.

To support the ongoing process of what the children have learned;

  •  Example relaxation routines are provided for the kids to take home
  • The Chill Skills website has free meditations for children

Typical Feedback

Typical feedback from parents/carers about their child’s behaviour since attending Chill Skills classes has been the following;

  • They noticed a positive change in child’s behaviour, where they now think before they react
  • Children have improved their ability to communicate feelings and issues
  • Improvement in sleeping patterns
  • An improvement in confidence and self-esteem
  • Increased levels of happiness & wellbeing
  • The child’s school teacher may also notice an improvement in their behaviour

Individual Sessions

These sessions are personalised sessions for the child

About the sessions:

  • These sessions are run following the same program as a typical Chill Skills class
  • The child is getting 1:1 attention
  • Can be used as a transition into the Chill Skills group setting

Mindfulness

Children learn how to relax through various styles of mindfulness & meditation techniques, they can then choose the style that works best for them.
